DAY OF PUBLIC THANKSGIVING

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU!

REMEMBER TO THANK
GOD THE FATHER, THE SON JESUS CHRIST, & THE HOLY SPIRIT!

In a time when the world is in chaos, wars rumbling all over, protests and occupations spreading, there is a moment we have to cease to thank God that we are alive for such a time as this. Where is the born-again believer of Jesus Christ? Where is the church triumphant? Where is the truth of God's holy word? Rise up church and declare to the world that Jesus loves you because He died for all humanity's sins. For one purpose which is to give new life thru Him for eternity in heaven!

An excerpt from George Washington's proclamation in October 1789...
"WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLIC THANKSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

Give thanks to the Lord for He is good!

2 Interesting Things Happened Yesterday

Yesterday, I drove over to the church during my lunch break. After arriving and while waiting outside the church miracle #1 happens. A lady that lives a few blocks from the church walks by and stops to ask, "What time are the services?" I explained the CWS details.  We started talking and she shared about her family and life struggles.  I had the privilege to pray for her right there on the sidewalk.  To be honest, that was a first for me but it sure was an exciting experience. She leaves after stating that she'll be visiting on Sunday.

While still waiting outside, miracle #2.  Carl, co-owner of The Shop, the barbershop in Elmont pulls up with a car full of canned and boxed foods they collected.  He was dropping off the first "shipment" as the drive still continues at their location. We emptied the car and put it in the church.  He and I talked about the unity that comes automatically when you are doing good to help and serve people in the community who are in need. Encouraged each other and went our separate ways.

I look at those 2 occurrences in the short time and reminded yet again that God is in control and He is working behind the scenes.  We have to be faithful with who and what He sends and gives to His church.  Be faithful in the small and big things.

Proverbs 3:1 My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart, 2 for they will give you a long and satisfying life. 3 Never let loyalty and kindness get away from you! Wear them like a necklace; write them deep within your heart. 4 Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will gain a good reputation. 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths. 7 Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn your back on evil. 8 Then you will gain renewed health and vitality. 9 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything your land produces. 10 Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with the finest wine.

A Prophetic Call to Prayer

http://www.faithnews.cc/2011/11/14/a-prophetic-call-to-prayer/

A Prophetic Call to Prayer

Like many other intercessors, Cindy Jacobs, co-founder of Generals International, was at TheCall Detroit this weekend. As the solemn assembly gathered, Jacobs released a prophetic word for the United States and Israel. The following is what the Holy Spirit spoke to Jacobs on 11-11-11:

For the Lord says the United States is fast approaching her “tipping point.” I am ready, says God, to reach out and balance but even if tremendous prayer is poured out, it will only steady the nation for a season unless there is a heart-felt turning back to the Lord.

The Lion of Judah is shaking His mane over the economy and the shaking of many systems of greed will be brought low. The constriction of the financial structures will hit the poor but it is time for my people to understand that if they give to the poor they will not lack.

There are hidden plots being hatched on many levels that need to be uncovered. Plots of anarchy on various levels from minor to large. The spirit of anarchy will try and manifest to hold captive and terrorize the cities and this must be turned in prayer. Terrorists are moving behind the scenes to hit more than one target out a time to strike terror into the hearts of people.

However, one will put a thousand to flight and two, ten thousand! I will expose and uncover those who plot together with unlikely partnerships if my people pray! There are some nations who are saying they are at peace with the United States but it is only a ploy. Intercede for exposure of these alliances.

I am calling the world, says the Most High God, to stand with Israel against her enemies, for the plots planned for the U.S. involve the two nations. The spirit of Babylon is even now being exposed and is roaring but I will unravel the structures supporting its economy.

Study: Why Young People Leave the Church

A recent study conducted by the Barna Group provides explanations as to why young American Christians are leaving the church. Reasons include a general idea that the church is overprotective, and that Christianity is too exclusive.

The Barna Group conducts studies on spirituality—especially Christianity in the United States today. This particular study was comprised of eight national studies, including interviews with teenagers, young adults, parents, youth pastors and senior pastors.

There is not one overwhelming reason that young Christians leave the church determined, the Barna Group reports. Six significant themes were uncovered as to why three out of every five young Christians leave the church temporarily or permanently.

Young people were reported to leave the church for the following reasons: (1) The church is overprotective. (2) Teens’ and 20-somethings’ experience of Christianity is shallow. (3) Churches come across as antagonistic to science. (4) Young Christians’ church experiences related to sexuality are often simplistic, judgmental. (5) They wrestle with the exclusive nature of Christianity. (6) The church feels unfriendly to those who doubt. Click here to read research findings with fuller explanations of these concerns.

In one sense, these findings are nothing new. Evangelist Sammy Tippit points out that the church has always dealt with the tension of inquiring young minds and Christian values.

“Young people are in a transitional period,” notes Tippit. “They’re in a period of becoming independent. They’re in a period of trying to discover for themselves who they are, what their purpose is. That’s difficult for the church because the church has some very solid concrete values.”

Tippit believes today’s American culture has indeed exasperated these issues. But the most concerning of the findings, says Tippit, is that young people struggle with Christianity claiming to be the only way—an idea central to the gospel (i.e. John 14:6).

“Somehow, we are not communicating what the gospel is to our young people,” laments Tippit. “Of course, we live in this society that says anything and everything is OK, and that we ought to accept other things. [It's important to know how] to deal with that and how to share what the gospel really is: who Jesus is and why He came. Until you grasp that, the other issues that surround that (the exclusive nature of Christianity) all become very difficult to comprehend.”

For today’s parents, Tippit has a few suggestions as to how to combat these church-leaving symptoms. For one thing, Tippit suggests, parents need to provide a firm foundation of Christian teachings and values to begin with, and then let them ask questions when they get to that point.

“That’s one of the real keys that the church has to understand: You can’t keep young people in a little box. It’s not going to work. You’ve got to give them the liberty to fail, the liberty to reach out and discover for themselves. But you’ve got to put something in them foundationally that will enable them to deal with those issues.”

Secondly, Tippit adds, parents and Christian adults need to be earnestly seeking Christ and modeling godly principles themselves. “We need to show them authentic Christianity: the kind of Christianity that is so real and so exciting that when they look at everything else, it just looks like, ‘Hey, this is where I need to be.’”

Thirdly, Christian adults need to pray. Pray for revival in America, which has often historically begun with youth.

Finally, education on the subject is vital. Tippit suggests the books Prayer Factor and Praying for Your Family as two good options.

The Teams In My Life

AT HOME
I ask my wife, Sherin, to keep me accountable. We remember that if we don't travel this journey together, it's not worth traveling at all.  We will never forget the first lesson in our ministerial training course from Pastor Hiram ... paraphrasing: Don't get into full-time or any ministry if your spouse is not ready, willing, and able to travel this road with you.  Ministering is a partnership. We are trusting in God for His grace, wisdom, and strength. We are learning these days.  We are making adjustments.  We are feeling our way thru this process.  Some days are easier than others.

But I am learning that God gave me this family to take care of before He gave a church / ministry to pastor.  When we take steps of faith, He will provide for every need.  When we take steps of faith, He will honor those who honor Him.  When we take steps of faith, He will go above and beyond to bless us.

The prayers, support, encouragement, and constructive feedback from parents, siblings, close friends, and fellow workers in His kingdom cannot go unnoticed!  Please don't stop!  Keep going!  God knows we need it!

AT "WORK"
Our team at Community Worship Service was put together by God.  We know it. We see it. We love it.

I value the team ... confidantes, constituents, and comrades (as per Bishop T. D. Jakes). I value empowering and equipping those with gifts and anointing to operate. I value delegation because someone else can do something better than I can. I value seeing someone's enthusiasm in serving and accomplishing great things. I value making people around me better. I value serving and helping those who are willing to take a risk. I value the new things I learn from other's skills and experiences. I value seeing the potential in the next generation and allowing them to exercise it and learn by making mistakes and becoming better leaders because of it.  What God needs to accomplish cannot be done without a knitting together of people going after the same vision and mission.

These are the awesome teams God has placed in my life.  I pray and thank God for them!

Perfect or Healthy Balance?

Finding the right balance isn't always easy.  There is me-time w/God, time with family, time for work, time for ministry/church, time for rest & relaxation, etc... However what order does it go in?  What percentage of time goes to what part of life?  Is there a perfect formula to get the equation to balance perfectly?  I don't know!  It might not be a perfect balance, but if a healthy balance is not set up at an early stage especially when ministry is involved, it could prove costly in the long run.

I have to keep priorities in order:
My God
My Family
My Calling

It takes time, effort, and sacrifice in planting a new church.  It takes time, effort, and sacrifice in raising a family.  It takes time, effort, and sacrifice in developing a relationship with Christ.  (Oops, I didn't write that in the "right order".)  Sometimes we have to say "NO" to certain things to keep a healthy balance.  Sometimes we say "NO" too much and create an unhealthy balance.  What helps me is the power of a good team at home and in ministry.

There is no formula to get a perfect balance.
There is a formula to get a healthy balance ... God, Family, Calling.

12 Killers of Good Leadership

I came across this article today which was authored by Ron Edmondson. Its a great read on good leadership!

"I know numerous leaders with great potential… They have all the appearance of being a good leader… But they lack one thing…or two… There are a few killers of good leadership… Any one of these can squelch good leadership… It’s like a wrecking ball of potential… It’s not that they can’t lead, but to continue to grow as a leader…to be successful at a higher level or for the long-term…they must address these issues.

12 Killers of Good Leadership

Here are 12 killers of good leadership:
Defensiveness – Good leaders don’t wear their feelings on their shoulders. They know other’s opinions matter and aren’t afraid to be challenged.

Jealousy – A good leader enjoys watching others on the team excel.

Revenge – The leader that succeeds for the long term must be forgiving and knows that “getting even” only comes back to harm them and the organization.

Fearfulness – The good leader remains committed when no one else is and must take risks no one else will. Others will follow. That’s what leaders do.

Favoritism - Good leaders don’t have favorites on the team. They reward for results not partiality.

Ungratefulness - Good leaders value people, knowing they cannot attain success without others.

Small-mindedness – Good leaders think bigger than today. They are dreamers and idea people.

Pridefulness - Pride comes before the fall. Good leaders remain humbled by the position of authority entrusted to them.

Rigidity - There are some things to be rigid about, such as values and vision, but for most issues, the leader must be open to change. Good leaders welcome new ideas, realizing that most everything can be improved.

Laziness – One can’t be a good leader and not be willing to work hard. In fact, the leader should be willing to be the hardest worker on the team.

Unresponsiveness – Good leaders don’t lead from behind closed doors. They are responsive to the needs and desires of those they attempt to lead. They respond to concerns and questions. They collaborate more than control. Leaders who close themselves off from those they lead will limit the places where others will follow.

Dishonesty – Since character counts highest, a good leader must be above reproach. When a leader fails, he or she must admit their mistake and work towards restoration.

A leader may struggle with one or more of these, but the goal should be to lead “killer-free.”
Leader, be honest, which of these wrecking balls do you struggle with most?

What would you add to my list? Can you think of any other killers of good leadership?"

Do You Know These People?

Does it matter that you don't know them personally? Does it matter you might not recognize their faces? They might be from anywhere or living down the block from you. Attached to these names are dozens of children, possibly spouses, extended family and friends.

They may not have a living and growing relationship with Jesus Christ or they might. They might be living the great life or they might be surviving on a daily basis. They might be healthy or they might be going thru revolving doors of doctors offices. They might be stable or they might be all over the place. They might be walking in sin or walking with the Lord. They might hide their burdens or they might wear their hurts on their sleeves.

Whatever they are going thru ... Do we have space in our hearts to love them? Do we have time to say a quick prayer for them? Do we have space for them to sit next to us on a Sunday morning or at small groups? Do we have a burden for souls for Jesus?  If you want to see more lives connect and grow in Christ & His Word, say a prayer for any or all of these names...they asked for it!

Remember the "IF-THEN" Equation?

CAN WE TAKE CARE OF THE "IF" SIDE OF THE EQUATION?
IF WE DO, GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF THE "THEN" SIDE!

Our young church is preparing ourselves as individuals, families, and as a church for prayer, we look at 2 Chronicles chapter 7 for a friendly reminder in verse 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Be Specific:  This is an answer from God to Solomon because of his prayer request in chapter 6.  Read it and see how specific Solomon was with this request.  God answered him back with specifics.

Know Your Identity: God's own people can and may turn away for Him and His ways.  He's allowing us another chance because of His great love and mercy to come back.  Know we are His chosen generation. Know we are the temple of the living God.  His glory needs to fill our lives!

Proactive Humility: Before God humbles us forcefully, he's giving us a chance to humble ourselves voluntarily.  Oh and another thing, we don't have to showcase our humility.  Let our hearts and minds be humble and submitted to the will of God.  He will raise us up in due time.  But He might not, until we are completely in His will.  Take care of our internal and God will take care of the external.

Take Initiative: We must pray and seek after God.  He's challenging us to make a move!  Are we desperate enough to do it?  Are we hurt enough to be taken care of by a loving God?  Go hard after Him.  As we get closer to Him, He will get closer to us!

Dead End: If we are on the road of wickedness, we are on a dead end road!  Our life and soul will be dead physically and spiritually.  We get a chance to turn back to Him.  Will we take advantage of another chance? Or will it be too late and we run over the cliff or into the brick wall with no turning back?

Get His Attention: We can get God's attention with our prayers.  Are you ready to see God's power in your life?  Is there something or someone that needs to experience the presence of God, forgiveness of sins, a healing in your body, family, relationships, emotions, finances, career, etc...!  Revival is coming to the people and to this community!

Dirty Issue #2

Dirty Issue #2: Idols (v. 3)
Nevertheless he continued in the sins of idolatry that Jeroboam son of Nebat had led the people of Israel to commit.

We have some idols now or we've had them before!  Is it your spouse? Or your children? Or the house and cars?  Is it the initials before or after your name?  Or maybe even the church you attend or ministry you're doing?  Is it blogging, facebook-ing, tweet-ing, etc.?

What takes up your time, talents, and treasure? Take a look at your calendar, your spent energy, your finances.  If you really study what you find, you can identify if and what idols are in your life.  Idols don't have life and cannot give life.  But Jesus lives and He has life and can give life.

Keep Jesus first in your life.  To be honest, He doesn't deserve to be anywhere else on anyone's list of "priorities".  After what He went thru and did for us, its shameful for us to peg him anywhere below #1 on our list.  "Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don't worry about missing out..." - Matthew 6:33 (The Message)

For a New Plant ... These Are Miracles!

It's definitely been a new and different week for me.  Almost every day this week, I've seen God's faithfulness and favor!

Take a listen and look for one miracle ...
The audio is the radio ad running on KLOVE 96.7 FM in New York this week.  It's humbling and exciting!  Sherin and others have said they heard it throughout the week.  I've tuned in everywhere I can and still haven't heard it yet ... ARRGGHH!  The church's hope is that children and families are blessed by this act of love.  We love Elmont and the people of Elmont.  We believe that God will bless this community and truly revitalize it for the greater good of all people.  Our chuch just wants to play a part.  God will enable and empower the church to reach beyond Elmont in the coming days!

Wait, there's more ... got confirmation the local paper is sending a team to take pics and do a story on the event and the church.  God is showing favor!  We are praying that thru this people get connected to the church which will direct them to Jesus.

Ok, if that wasn't enough, here's one more miracle.  A local business has decided to be a financial sponsor for this event. Any amount is a big help! And few others have decided to sponsor with gifts for raffles and in-kind donations.  God is good and He will provide for His glory! If you would like to support with your God-given resources, please contact us!

There's a PARTY IN THE PARKING LOT this Saturday.  I'll be there in my orange t-shirt.  The entire team is working hard and we all are prayerfully and thankfully moving ahead!

Enjoying the Miracles,

Cecil

Dirty Issue #1

We all have issues in our life.  It may look and feel different for each person.  Some things we have faced, while we are facing others right now. Sometimes we bury these DIRTY ISSUES in the deepest parts of our mind and cover it up with dirt. But to be truly liberated from these issues, we have to dig it out and throw it away.  In the next few days, I'd like to share a few things I received from meditating on 2 Kings chapter 3.  Please read it so you understand the context.  These installments of Dirty Issues will focus on verses 1 thru 12.  Let's dig some ditches!

Dirty Issue #1 - Generational Curse (v. 1 & 2)
Joram son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, but not as his father and mother had done. He got rid of the sacred stone of Baal that his father had made.

Joram had an opportunity to break the status quo from the way of life he grew up in.  His dad and mom didn't lead by example in terms of living a life that pleases God Jehovah!  They were evil people and they raised their kids in that environment.  That's the only way of life that Joram knew.  But when Joram came into power he did something that showed a shred of hope in getting out of that way of life.

We all are born into a "situation".  Some of us were born into great surroundings with stability and a faith in God & His Word.  Some of us were born into broken homes and relationships.  Some of us didn't know both of our parents.  Some of us witnessed craziness as we grew up.   Some of us live each day wondering will we be alive to see tomorrow.  We think we have to be stuck in the rut because that's all there is and all we know.  Joram did what he watched growing up.  We can continue to live in what we know.  These might be called generational curses in different forms and fashions.

But here's the thing, we don't have to feel stuck to just live out life with the cards we were dealt by our previous generations.  If we had to be stuck in generational curses, then Jesus would also be stuck in the curse of sin because of his forefathers, Adam & Eve!  Here's a friendly reminder and bold statement...THE POWER OF JESUS CHRIST IS STRONGER THAN POWER OF GENERATIONAL CURSES. If we start and develop a relationship with Jesus, we can truly live a "new life" with Him.  Our old person starts to shed off and the new creation from within starts to appear.  We can't do it on our own.  We need His presence and power! Let's not get stuck with a generational curse but let's turn it around and start a new chain of generational blessings thru God.

Enjoy Digging,

Cecil

After 5 Years, This Is What I've Learned

My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts," says the LORD.
"And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. (Isaiah 55:8)

Sherin and I celebrated 5 years of marriage last week.  God's been great to us and for us everyday.  We sometimes have to stop and remind ourselves how blessed we are.  Hey, we're not perfect in any way, but we are happy with the life we have. To be honest, naturally we'd like more and different "things".  But we chose this road that we're traveling together and we're thankful for it.  Recently we saw video of our wedding day and realized how quickly time flies. The months, weeks, and days leading up to wedding day were memorable (still have my binder).  We graduated from college on the same weekend 5 years ago. We got married that same summer 5 years ago.  As one chapter in our individual lives closed, a new chapter in our lives together started.

I admire her for dedication to our family.
I love her for who she is...daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend.
I pray for her because she is my life partner.
I treasure her for her gift to discern.
I encourage her because she is special.
I need her because God put her in my life for a wonderful purpose.
I stand by her because she makes me look good.

In these 5 years, we have learned a lot from and about each other. We have our play fights and real fights.  We have our tears of great joy and tears of loss.  We've been shocked with good news and sad news.  We've had trips to islands and out on the island.  We cook for each other.  We shop differently.  We clean dishes differently.  We see things differently.  We understand things differently.  We are not the same.  We became parents.  We became homeowners. We answered a call for ministry.  We are reminded of the great parents, brothers and sister we have.  We do have a great group of friends to encourage, advise, and provide accountability.  In all these areas and so much more, we are still growing & learning!

This was a song sung at our wedding.  But its our prayer ..
Jesus, be the center, Be our source, be our light, Jesus
Jesus, be the center, Be our hope, be our song, Jesus
Jesus, be our vision, Be our path, be our guide, Jesus
Be the fire in our heart, Be the wind in these sails
Be the reason that we live, Jesus, Jesus

Springboard Principle

Commandment #9:
Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.

In gymnastics there is the Vault competition.  You run down the runway as fast as you can and jump onto this springboard.  This action propels you high in the air where you can do some cool twists and turns and then land on your feet...hopefully!  There were some memorable Olympic moments for the USA on the vault in years past: 1984: Mary Lou Retton Wins the Olympic All-Around Title with Perfect 10 on Vault Exercise; 1996: Kerri Strug Sticks Her Vault on an Injured Ankle

Hmmm ... what does this have to do with Commandment #9?

Sometimes we are running so hard after the things we have to accomplish on our TO-DO list.  We see the goals we measure ourselves against.  We have the dreams and visions in our mind...even some God-given!  The gold medal is there for the taking and if we stick the "vault" exercise, its ours.  But to get that "gold" we have to use that springboard that sits on the floor to get us to the preferred destination.

Are we just seeing the potential end result and jumping on people in our lives to get to where we want to be?  Are we stepping on toes and dreams of others so that we propel ourselves?
Are we push others down so that we can push ourselves over the top?
Are we pouncing on others' God-given dreams so that our dream is fulfilled?

Springboard Principle:
Don't jump, step, or push others down to lift ourselves up!

Let's see people for who they are not only what they can do for us.  Allow them to dream and use their God-given gifts and talents.  Hey you  never know, those dreams and gifts will compliment and further the vision and mission of the church.  Everyone wants to be a part of something, but they don't have to feel like robots.

Go for the "gold" as one team.

Enjoy the Ride,

Cecil

Towels Still Available

Towel given to people getting baptized!

This weekend was surreal.  A first in many ways...First baptism service for CWS.  First surprise baptism candidate shows up on Sunday so instead of 1 there are 2 new people publicly declaring their allegiance to Jesus.  First baptism service for me...little nervous but prayers helped.  We had 3 towels prepared and 2 were given as gifts. More towels in stock for whoever is next into the baptism tank.

You can check out the pics from Going Public service on FB: First Church of God.  Hit the LIKE button and stay connected.  There were 8 first time visitors at CWS which is an awesome sight.  Praying for them and everyone!

A few thoughts from Jesus' baptism:
1. Jesus pleased His father.  We can please God the Father with our faith and obedience.  If we want to please our earthly dads, how much more should we please our heavenly father?

2. Jesus was sent into the desert after His baptism.  Even with the temptations and attacks from Satan, the angels of God watched over Him.  He was also equipped with the best weapon in those battles, the Word of God.  In your desert experiences even after obeying His commands, believe He is watching over you.  With that said, you must equip yourself by digesting the Word of God because it will come in handy in the middle of the battles of life.

3. Jesus embraced His mission after His baptism.  He began His ministry at 30 years old.  He embraced it with obedience and humility.  We have to recognize from whom we got our mandate or commission.  Can you believe you got enlisted by God to fulfill the Great Commission?  Tell someone about the love of Jesus. Embrace your calling and gifting.  Live your calling out!  See great things happened!

Yet This I Call To Mind

YET THIS I CALL TO MIND ...

1. God still loves us and so we are not defeated or consumed.  He is our victory. He is our strength.

2. God's compassion and mercies never fail.  He cares for you.

3. God's mercies are new every morning.  New day equals new gift which requires more of God's grace and mercy.

4. God's faithfulness is great!  We cannot fathom how great He is.  Even in our screw ups, He loves us.

5. God is our portion and He is all we need.  Naturally we might not have much, but if we have Him, we should be satisfied.

6. God is good to us if we have hope in Him and seek after Him.  Put our hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Worship Him with all our heart, strength, and mind.  We will taste His goodness in our lives.

... AND THEREFORE I HAVE HOPE

Thru a string of events last week and inevitably understood it was the Holy Spirit orchestrating it all...I was led to read Lamentations chapter 3.

You had to be there on Sunday for the Worship Celebration to hear the story. We have all been thru or are going thru or might experience the affliction, confusion, bitterness, and desperation as read in verse 19. Read verses 1 thru 20 and get some details.

Is any of that relevant to your life right now? Thank God the story does not end there. There is more in that chapter and there is more to your story...yet to be written.

All To Be Said Is ... WOW!

This past Sunday was one of those days you won't forget.  It was Cardboard Testimonies Sunday.  The Drama Ministry team produced a powerful and memorable presentation on how Jesus can still transform lives today.  13 Testimonies of protection, provision, miracles, healings, broken addictions, hope, etc...  Not to mention we had our highest attendance since launch ... 84 people in attendance with 2 first time visitors!

I believe, along with the entire team, that many new testimonies were and will be birthed because of those cardboard testimonies.  Spontaneous applause after each testimoney was heard, tears were shed, and hearts were moved.  The message parlayed the skit and focused on the simple and basic principles of the faith.  Salvation & Baptism.  Altar call was made and several lives came forward to dedicated their lives to Jesus.  Some even made decisions to follow the commandment of Jesus and follow into the waters of baptism.

The video of the service is being edited as I write this and will be made available on YouTube as soon as possible.  Stay tuned and until then check out more pics on Facebook - First Church of God ... https://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/media/set/?set=a.235197196514986.66074.174396775928362&type=1

The Lord Has Done Great Things

I was reading Psalms 126 ...

1. We'll ask ourselves are we dreaming?  Why?  Because the sight of people and fortunes being restored in the presence of God.

2. We'll be so excited that we can't contain it.  Those around us will also see the work and power of God and they themselves will say, "The Lord has done great things for them."

3. How can we not be happy when we see our lives put back together by Him?  Can we be happy when we see lives give their hear to the Lord?  When someone decides to take water baptism, how can we not be happy?  What is your reason for being happy and full of joy?

4. We can't restore anyone or anything.  Only God can do that.  Only when the "rains" of His presence and Holy Spirit pour down will the seed start to grow and in due season bear fruit to be a blessing.

5. In addition to the "rain" God will send down, we need to produce some "water".  Through the tears of our prayers.  Those tears will not be in vain.  There will be songs of joy to follow.

6. We have a responsibility to carry the seed of the good news = Gospel.  It's not for us to keep in our hand or in our pockets.  We are carrying it so we can let it go.  God will make those seeds grow and we'll be returning to His presence with new lives in tow with us.  When we return to Him with those new lives, the dream is not a dream any longer, but reality!

CWS is growing.  There's exciting things coming.  Times of fellowship.  Times of loving our community!  Times of prayer and surrender!  Times of transformation spiritually and physically!

The Lord had done great things and He's not done writing this story!

Love Giving T-Shirts Away

I love to walk into the church and sense a special day is ahead.

I love to see people engaged in a time of worship and praise.

I love to see spontaneous moves be orchestrated by the greatest composer & director - Holy Spirit.

I love to hear how God speaks the same thing to different people w/o their knowledge.

I love to hear how people's hurts, struggles, pain, and needs were ministered to by a song, the Word, or a testimony.

I love to see how a simple worship set up can go a long way.

I love when the only plan is that we worship our way thru the service.

I love when first time visitors become second time guests.

I love to see second time guests become consistent attenders at church.

I love to see consistent attenders bring their friends and family with them to church.

I love to see individuals exercise their God-given gift and talent for His glory.

I love to be obedient to a Spirit-led request by a former drug addict to share his testimony to encourage the church. God is able to transform anyone! His first visit to the church, only talked to him on the phone once prior, and didn't know his story until he shared it in front of the church, we had run out of time, but still!!!!

I love to serve God and  His church.

Oh by the way, I love when we give t-shirts away after CWS ... because that means we have more new people coming to church.  Its our gift to those who attend for the first time.  We gave 3 away this Sunday and we have more to give.  Get yours this Sunday @ CWS.  Thanking God for every memory on this journey!

She's Growing Up

She's my girl.  She's my baby.  She's my princess. She's my kid.  She's my gift from God.  She is growing up.  Some days I just have to stop in my tracks and stare at how quickly time flies.  I understand she's only three.  But I ...

Still can remember she had the faux hawk at the hospital.  Now shes brushing her own hair out.

Still can remember running home for lunch break to give her a bath.  Now she's giving herself a bath with a little help of course.

Still can remember her first alphabet spoken was "C" ... for everything.  Now she's writing her name.

Still can remember her "swimming" down the hallway floor.  Now she loves swimming in the pool and riding her little toddler bike on her own.

Still can remember laying out her onesies and infant outfits.  Now she's telling us what she wants to wear (and she's not bad with her selections).

Still can remember her raising her hands to say "Hallelujah" when someone would sing to her.  Now she is trying to mimick people she has seen doing body worship.

Still can remember feeding her milk and baby food. Now she's eating fruits and some vegetables.  She loves strawberries, like daddy.

Still can remember calming her down in the car by playing music or singing to her.  Now she's telling us what CD to play, which track, and sings along and keeps us entertained.

There's more but I'll save those for when she's 4.  I love you Abi!  You're growing up but will always be my little girl.

Be Men Of ...

Based on Mark 9:14-29 ...

To the Dads:
1. Be men of prayer.  Speak up in the chaos.  Cry out to Jesus in the middle of the craziness and noise of the world around you.

2. Be men of obedience & action.  If God asks you something or directs you to do something, just do it.  You don't have to be someone you're not or do something you're not meant to.  Just be who you are in Christ.

3. Be men of faith.  Believe for your today and your tomorrow.  When the situation calls for you to give in or give up, you keep believing in Jesus for your breakthrough.

4. Be men of commitment. Do not give up on someone or something because it's not what you expected or hoped it would be.  If God gave it to you, He can give you the grace and strength to stay committed to the people or situation.  Be committed to God, your family, and your calling.

5. Be men of excellence.  Always want the best for your family.  Work hard for it.  God will honor your desires and ambitions.  Do your part and He has promised to do His.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To the Church:
1. When the world comes to us, the "disciples", looking for help, prayer, and support, lets make sure that we are strong in God, full of His Spirit, and ministering unto them with love.  Let the world not say, the "disciples couldn't do it.".  We can learn from the situation ... certain things can only be handled thru fasting & prayer.
2. Do not doubt the power of Jesus Christ.  We should not say, "if you can Lord, do this?".  We need to believe that Jesus can and will do it.  Our faith will determine the eventual results.  Jesus can do EVERYTHING.  Do we believe that HE CAN!  "Everything is possible for him who believes." - Mark 9:23
Wisdom First
Small excerpt from last Sunday's message series: Vital Signs: Wisdom
James 3:13-18 & 1 Kings 3:3-15
2 Types of Wisdom & It's Characteristics
a) Earthly: envy, selfish ambition, boast, unspiritual, of the devil, disorder, confusion, evil practice
b) Heavenly: pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy, good fruit, impartial, and sincere
*Ambition: its good to have it so we can move ahead and accomplish different things with our life here.  However, if we cross the line, we hurt people along the way and our intentions are skewed and it does not bring glory to God.  This is where meekness and ambition need to work together.  I'm very ambitious especially when it comes to ministry and local church.  My heart is for the local church because I believe that is God's home and channel thru which He reaches and transforms the hopeless, hurting, and lost.  I want to see individuals growing in Christ and the church growing to impact the community and the world!
We connect it to the wisest person in history: King Solomon.  He had a dream where God spoke to him and presented him with a "blank check" in 1 Kings 3:5 ... "Ask for whatever you want me to give you."  WOW!  If God gave us that opportunity, what would we do with it?  Solomon responds in the form of a prayer in verses 6-9.  Solomon was REFLECTIVE (grateful for history), RELEVANT (know the situation), REAL (who we are), & then made REQUEST (for wisdom & discerning heart)!
Solomon asked for wisdom and it was given to him.  Immediately he was tested as you read from verses 16 on.  Be careful what you ask for, because He will answer and you could be tested right away.  But you notice in verse 13 that God gave Solomon more than he asked for.  We usually fill the "blank check" with the "riches and honor" request and then squander it because we didn't have the wisdom how to use those "blessings".
The challenge to us is this: Fill in that blank check ... the "money box" with wisdom instead of our "wish list" of material or physical blessings.  If we ask for wisdom first, He will give us everything else we need to fulfill our calling, responsibility, and mandate on this earth for His glory.  He knows how He wants to use you for His purpose and He'll give you the tools to accomplish that.  Just ASK FOR WISDOM FIRST!
Memorable Memorial Day Weekend
It's been a while since the past 2 weekends have been filled with travel and milestones along this journey.
What a weekend!  Short trip to Philly.  Spent Saturday at the Philadelphia Zoo.  Seeing some of the animals and how funny they look to us made us wonder how God must have a sense of humor when He created all these creatures (hippos and rhinos).  Seeing some other animals made us wonder why He took the time to create them (reptiles section) ... Sher didnt care for the lizards!  =)  Then we came back to the hotel and just relaxed with Sher and Abi in the pool.  Abi loves the water and she tried on her new princess swimsuit.
Sunday morning we were at church in Philly.  We missed CWS and everyone back home, but everything was in good hands.  For the first time, I ministered from the Word for Holy Communion & administered communion to the congregation with the help of other servants of God.  Talk about being nervous but confident that He'd help me thru it by His grace. Thank God because they said they were blessed with the message and the service.  They saw it in a different way that made them think how important communion is for us.
Monday morning met up with everyone to march and serve in the Elmont Memorial Day Parade.  Great turnout and teamwork from our church - 28 people - from 6 month old baby to 60 year old grandpa and everyone in between!  Everyone gave out hundreds of bottled water and invite cards to onlookers along the parade route.  Then more giveaways at the festivities at the end of the parade.  Served the community with over 350 cold bottled waters on hot day along parade route, several Fresh Start Strong Faith tshirts, and hundreds of invite cards.  Sharing the hope that Jesus can give was an awesome experience.  A memorable part in the day was when out of nowhere the parade chairman came to me and asked: "Pastor, do you have anyone that can sing the National Anthem?".  My eyes and smile got really big and said, "Oh yes we do, sir!"
Here's what happened: https://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/video/video.php?v=10150190989876615&comments. (Log in to Facebook).  "Totally unexpected to us but all part of His Master plan!!!. ." "It's amazing how God opens the right doors. We are blessed to be a blessing.. awesome" "That was AWESOME"
Playing Favorites?
If God the Father played favorites, He wouldn't send Jesus and give us the New Testament.
If God the Son played favorites, He wouldn't get on that cross and die for everyone.
If God the Holy Spirit played favorites, He would have just called it a day, on Pentecost.
God in all of His glory loves everyone.  He hates sin, but He loves the sinner.  He has chosen all of us, we have the choice to accept His love for us.  He loves the beauty queen and the one that never got asked out on a date.  He loves the millionaire and the homeless.  He loves the educated and the illiterate.  He loves every nationality.
James 2:1-13 talks about showing favoritism and how it's a sin.  We are not to place judgment on people based on how we see them.  We are to show mercy on people based on how God sees them.  Let's be aware of how we act and treat people.  If we've been on the wrong end of favoritism, know that we are loved and seen as a person that was fearfully and wonderfully made by the hands of God.  If we've been dishing out favoritism, let's reflect, be contrite and ask forgiveness, and remember to walk humbly before the Lord.
We don't get to choose who should hear the Gospel message, we do get to choose whether or not to share the message of hope with people.  Let's make the right choices.
First Mother's Day
Yesterday was special in many ways.  One was that it was the first Mother's Day at the CWS.  The Children's Ministry leader and her team did a great job in putting together a short and sweet presentation. The kids from Kids Korner Explorers & Discovery Kidz came together and read out words of appreciation to the mothers.  Then there was a short video clip highlighting the wonderful things about mothers.  Happy Mothers Day everyday!
Let's keep all mothers in prayer.  No one is perfect, including mothers, but they are precious in the eyes of God.  Don't forget to pray for those who never knew their mother, or those who have had to say goodbye to their mothers on this earth, or those who want to be mothers so bad but are not yet, or those that want to be a good mom but dont know how.  Hey, also pray for the single moms that are doing it all on their own.  And for the single dads that have to be the "moms" to their kids too.
Since you're in a praying mode ... why not come out for a night of prayer?  This Friday night at the church!
T & T Effect - Part 1: Trials
Just like we have vital signs that are medically examined to ensure there is life in our physical body, there are vital signs to see if there is life in our spiritual being.  Faith is one of the vitals signs for a follower of Jesus Christ.  Trusting in Him through our good days and our not so good days.  Having the living Word of God in our hearts is another vital sign.  When we face temptations from Satan, use the Word of God to defeat His attacks.
If you read James chapter 1, you will see what I call the "T & T Effect".  Trials and Temptations affecting our spiritual vital signs.  Trials (tests) are from God to develop our faith in Him.  It says to be happy when you face trials.  How weird is that?  Are you serious?  It might not be easy to smile looking at the trial straight up, but smile at the fact that God still cares about you by testing you.  Look beyond the trial and you see that He wants to build your faith, endurance, and character.  Our spiritual muscles are stronger because of the testing of our faith.  We become more mature and complete in  Him.
In the middle of the sermon on Sunday, as everyone was quietly sitting there listening, I asked everyone to get ready for a "surprise" test.  Asked the ushers to hand out answer sheets and pencils.  Everyone, including ushers looked at me with a puzzled look.  They all were wondering what's going on and trying to figure out what's next.  After a few seconds of anxiety, I revealed it was a joke.  No surprise test.  But it served a point, sometimes as we are just strolling along in life, God will throw us a "surprise" test in life.  He'll throw us in a situation we never dreamt of.  He'll take something away from us.  He'll see how much you really trust Him or trust something or someone else for our existence.  We have no choice but taking the surprise test.  We do have a choice on HOW we take it.  Trust in Him.
When you pass His test, you get the best reward.  Not a sticker or star, or a gift from loved ones, that are great but all temporary and will fade away in time.  God will give you the crown of life in heaven.  That crown is being specifically made for you.  He is sizing it for you as you pass each test He gives you.  Verse 12 says it best, "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."
Tests administered by people of this earth, are to evaluate how much you know.  Tests administered by God is to see if you trust Him and if you do, it will build your faith, give you perseverance which leads to maturity and being complete.
Stay tuned for T & T Effect - Part 2: Temptations
Another First
Experienced the first EASTER SUNDAY service at the new Community Worship Service this past Sunday.  I was very anxious and excited all at the same time.  It's a big day in reaching out to the community. The whole weekend was tremendous!
The weekend started off with a damper literally because Saturday's car wash for the community was postponed due to the rain.  But it was awesome to see a group of people come out to walk around the neighborhood and deliver invite cards to the Easter Sunday service.  The team went out in prayer and faith.  Realize the teams went out house-to-house walking in a steady and strong rain.  The rain couldn't stop this.  400 homes around the church received invite cards.  (FYI: car wash is set for this Saturday 4/30 @ 11 am).
Sunday morning arrives and God just proved again that He is doing something.  The actual service was unique in that a drama presentation was the main message.  The young men and women in it did a wonderful job in preparing and executing with such passion.  It was powerful and moving.  Then we spend some time in prayer and worship.  Lives came to the altar to give their heart to the Lord, get a fresh start, healing, and prayer!  To see people crying out to God and to be able to pray with them was a blessing.
For a newly planted service, we've averaged 37 people in attendance and 2 first time visitors weekly.  This Sunday we had 57 people in attendance and 4 first time visitors.  A young lady who came alone last week, came back this Sunday with her husband and two children.  One lady came because of the invite card in her mailbox.  Two other gentlemen came from personal invites from their friends.
These are the kind of days you love to have.  Not just people there but the presence of God and the power of the Holy Spirit experienced first hand by so many.  Come check us out one week.  We'd love to see you there!
His Arrival Is Just The Beginning
I was reading John chapter 11 and something really spoke to me and hope it blesses you...
As soon as Martha heard Jesus arrived in town, she didn't wait for Him to get to their house, but she went out to meet Him where He was.  This lady was bold.  She basically blamed His late arrival for her brother's death.  Not only that but she also turned this "problem" into His problem by stating that God the Father could do whatever He the Son asked for.  Her declaration of faith is the turning point in this miracle.
LIFE APPS
1. Don't settle for the small wins.
If you see God starting to move onto the scene of your life, He's just arrived on the scene.  As in this story, the miracle didn't take place when He arrived.  Don't be satisfied with His arrival at the outskirts of town OR life but dare to get out of the comforts of your "home" and meet Him where He's at so that our entire life is transformed.  If we see Him answering one prayer request, don't rest on the laurels of that victory, and relax thinking He'll just take care of everything else in one shot.  Continue to seek Him out thru prayer, worship, and fellowship.
2. Be bold to tell Jesus what's in your heart.
The hurts, pains, desires, crazy dreams, etc... He wants to hear it from you even though He knows everything already.  Dare to dream big dreams.  Dare to be different in living a godly life in obedience to Him so that He can answer us!
3. The full miracle awaits your commitment to Him.
If you boldly go after Him consistently and continuously, the complete miracle will be seen in your life.  Your soul, health, mindset, relationships, finances, career, education, family, and all that makes up you will be a new creation of Jesus.  He will totally transform your life From The Inside Out: http://youtu.be/DP_Ry7yrYxY.  As it says, "My heart and my soul, I give You control.  Consume me from the inside out Lord."
Have a blessed week!
New Service Plant's Missions Miracle
Couple of weeks off from writing ... Quick recap since last post:
Missions Possible Sunday @ Community Worship Service of First COG.  Let's just say it is a God-thing!
The ushers took the offering and quickly counted so we can inform the congregation of what they were able to do for missions.  We announced $2K or so immediately.  That was a great number for a new service plant's inaugural missions offering from a congregation of about 50 people.  But I guess God wasn't done.  The team went upstairs to do a more elaborate count and realized actually there was a lot more offered and pledged.  After the "recount", the new amount was $8000.  All of us sitting around the table counting the money and cards, just were in amazement.  "You've got to be kidding me!" is what I remember saying/thinking!  God is definitely moving in different ways!  And He isn't done yet, because more people has stated they will be supporting.  Thank God for everyone and all that He is doing!
The missions team had identified certain persons and project to support:
A) Ann Vadakottu - Missionary to Guatemala ... work with children at an orphanage.  She is a full-time missionary going for 1 year to Guatemala.  Her dream is to minister in India.
B) NF - - Serving in Middle East ... work with women and children.  She is going to serve for 3 years.
C) Japan Disaster Relief - via Church of God World Missions.  Bring essential aide to the cities ravaged by the earthquake and tsunami.
Please keep these people and project and all in the missions field in your prayers!
WITNESS
Based on Acts 1:3-7 ...
Remember the ways and times God has proved His power in our lives. Don't doubt the work of God in our life. That's our story to share with the help of His Spirit to others!
If we are promised a new gift (Holy Spirit), why just settle for what we already have? Hold onto our salvation and public identification of a Christ-follower through baptism, but GO AFTER the new gift. Then share your story with others! As a witness, we must maintain our credibility as a witness in our daily walk of life out in the world. Don't give chance for Satan and the world to poke holes in our story!
Thank God ... the format of the service changed a bit yesterday. Started with a worship song and then the Word and closed with worship. The worship time was awesome, people were just enjoying the presence of God. Few people said they haven't experienced that before or in a long time. Praise God!
Found out afterwards that the last song was spur of the moment.  God touched our hearts!
Crumbs of Love
What do we do with the crumbs of food that fall to the tabletop or floor? We throw it away ... hopefully! Or maybe the dog comes walking by and licks it up for a quick snack. Something we have no use for or see as "crumbs" might be someone else's 1-course snack and dinner. I'm going to encourage you to read Matthew 15:21-28.
Are we like the foreigner woman that was restrained from getting to Jesus because she was seen as a "dog" in the minds of Jesus' disciples? She was being told by the so-called followers of Jesus that she had no right to be near Jesus.
Are we like the disciples thinking we can be selfish with Jesus by keeping Him to ourselves? What's really going on in our minds when a truly desperate soul is in search for hope and salvation? Do we label folks as they're not good enough to have "my" Jesus?
Jesus went to that lady's hometown not just to heal the lady's daughter but to teach his followers that He not only came for those of Israel but for people of all backgrounds. It didn't matter the race, ethnicity, class, gender, education level, etc... He came to seek and save the lost!
For those of us who have experienced His salvation have had the 5-course dinner because we have received His immense love. He gave it to us by dying on the cross for us and so we can be set free and have eternal life. Can we be generous enough to at least give some "crumbs" of love that we experienced to someone that we have in our life that needs some love in their life? The "crumb" that someone needs might be an encouraging word, a quick prayer, and listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, a person to give them guidance. If those people can see that these crumbs are coming from the Master's table, it will give them faith, hope, deliverance, and healing all arenas of their life.
Let's make sure we're not holding the mindset of the "disciples" of Jesus. We are to be a WITNESS to all people!
Cecil
This Is My Story
There’s a principle in church ministry that states that any ministry should have volunteers from the church to lead and handle the whole idea of the specific ministry. Until then, the ministry should not start. You wait until people with a passion and gifts to lead a children’s ministry to start a Kids Korner Explorers (ages 3-6) and now to launch the next phase of children's ministry - Discovery Kidz (ages 7-12).  Now is the time for these things and more as seen in the timing of God.
When we trust in God to open the doors, allow Him to inspire the hearts of the people, and let Him raise up volunteers, leaders, and behind-the-scenes worker, the road ahead will be worth the journey.
It is similar to the journey we as individuals and families take in life. As I look back on my three-plus decades of life here in New York, there are ups, downs, victories, defeats, surprises, embarrassments, and learning experiences. As you enter each new stage in life you quickly realize it comes with a new set of responsibilities and expectations.
The college years you experience freedom that you can exploit for your own demise or you can capitalize the opportunities to build your future. After getting that degree and landing that job – where in this economic state of the country might be hard to do – you feel the pressure of having to find a spouse. (That’s a whole other post.) You get married and start your family life and wear the husband/wife hat. Up to this point, most of us have only worried about our self-preservation and maintenance. After getting married you realize there is someone else’s well-being you are mandated to care for. Then comes the greatest joy and responsibility – being a parent.
Each stage presents its own challenges and questions. Which college do I select? Which major/profession do I pursue? Which company do I work for? Do I stay in New York or move out of state? What am I looking for in a spouse? Where do we live? How do we pay the mortgage?
Each stage has its highlights. You get the scholarship to your first choice college. You graduate with honors and have a job lined up. You get promoted. You get engaged, married, and then comes a little bundle of joy. You become new homeowners.
I’m glad to say that God will only lead us where His grace can keep us. If we are in the will of God, just enjoy the ride. Even with all the bumps along the way, the journey is definitely worth it because you know that God’s hand is on your life.
There is one principle I try to live by which is to not stress or complain over things I cannot control but put my best effort into things I have influence over and trust God to do the rest. Let the defeats roll off your back and move forward. Learn the lesson from the experience and apply it if similar circumstances present themselves in your life. Don’t let the victories get to your head because pride comes before the fall (mom’s occasional advice). Learn from the victorious experiences as well – there are lessons there too. What did you do differently that gave you the victory? Hopefully, God is involved in the process.
